Q: Do we need to bring our own bed linen and pillow case?

A: I'd recommend bringing a sleeping bag liner, with a pillowslip on it. They're great, very compact and it ensures you know what you're sleeping on. I've been surviving on mine in Japan for a few months! You can get either cotton or silk, silk costs more but is lighter, more compact and in my opinion nicer to sleep in. You should be able to pick one up for AU$50-100 depending on shop and quality. All hostels (as far as I'm aware) have linen available for hire, but I'd still go the silk liner, sleep inside that, and then get their linen on top. They're clean enough, but not spotless. I've seen better and worse around the world.
