Q: I'm driving to Exmouth but have given myself 10 days to get there. Where should I stop at along the way and do you think this is enough time?

A: Perth - Exmouth is roughly a continuous 16 hour drive. Allowing 10 days to get there should be plenty of time :) I am presuming you will be travelling direct up the Brand Hwy. Personally I find the trip north up through Muchea and Regan's Ford to be worth a look befor hitting the highway. Regan's Ford hasnt got much to offer but is a lovely picnic spot worthy of kicking back to enjoy morning tea of lunch over. There are planty of fishing towns along the coast on the drive north...Dongara, Leeman, Greenhead are all lovely spots. Jurien Bay has grown immensely in the last few years and could be worth spending a day or 2 here...very lovely spot :) Cervantes is definitely worth a visit as you can spend a few hours admiring the eerie moonscape like spectacle that is The Pinnacles! You might even like to head inland a little way to visit the Benedictine Monks at New Norcia. Wildflowers abound through this area also and are a BIG attraction of the region. Not much to see at Eneabba...I generally will only stop here for a restroom break or something to eat if I need to. There is a lake nearby there however which is worth a quick stop to view. There is the colonial buildings to view at Greenough just before Geraldton. Geraldton itself is a major regional centre and is worth spending a few days wandering through. There is the Z force and HMAS Sydney memorials which I especially admire. You can also have a peek at the spy base just to the north of town! Off the coast is the Abroholos Islands which you might like to explore...you can fly over on a tourist flight or hop on a charter fishing vessel if you wish :) Just to the north of Geraldton is the lovely townsite of Northhampton. The copper's here are notorious for catching speeding drivers so be warned! Lovely town though with many colonial buildings. You have the option here of continuing up the highway or taking the coast road through to Kalbarri...I prefer the coast road myself. There is a lovely old farm homestead on a hill on the right hand side as you travel up the coast road...cant remember the name but is a stunning property to view. Next would be the windswept cliffs just before Kalbarri townsite...again just stunning to behold! Kalbarri itself is worth spending a few days at...one of my fave spots to relax :) Take in the beaches, do some fishing, visit the gorges, the natural window, maybe go canoeing in the gorges, lovely seafood restaurants. Kalbarri has heaps to offer tourists of all ages and budgets :) After Kalbarri you'll need to head back inland to the highway to continue your trek north. Not much to see IMO between Kalbarri and Carnarvon. Carnarvon is worth a look. The bridge over the Gascoyne River is impressive (wet or dry) and the old OTC satelitte dishes are worth wandering through. The area is renowned for market gardens and you can sample some great local produce at the farm gates :) Carnarvon banana's easily eclipse their Qld cousins IMO! Next would be the stop off at the Nannutarra Roadhouse before turning off the highway and heading into Exmouth. From memory, there is a lovely waterhole behind the roadhouse where you can enjoy a refreshing swim :) You could stop at Learmonth if you want but I prefer to head straight on through as I'm generally quite excited to be seeing the end of the road trip at this point. Exmouth has heaps to offer as I'm sure you already know about. Likewise there is the delights of Coral Bay, Denham, and Monkey Mia to explore as well. I hope that gives you a few ideas of some things to do on the trip north. Enjoy your trip! Cheers :)
