Q: I am moving to sydney in a few months and have been trying to find units to live in. Is chippendale a safe suburb? What would be the average cost of living (per year) to live in sydney?

A: Chippendale has a bit of a crime rate, but if you take care with your security and don't walk around alone at night you should be OK. Cost per year depends on your lifestyle. If you are a party animal then of course it will be expensive, especially around the city as it is really expensive for drinks and dinners. But otherwise if you buy your groceries you can do it for around $80 per week if you are careful. The average dinner price at a good restaurant is $30 per main meal. But there are loads of cheaper restaurants as well - but not much for under $15 per main meal. Transport is around $6.00 per trip on bus or train. Around Sydney university is a fun area to live - get a map and have a look, but beware of Redfern (and Chippendale). The Inner West is cheap, the eastern suburbs and northern beaches are really expensive (but very nice - so you pay for it). Look at www.domain.com.au for prices.
