A: Both cities are very safe, Canberra has a small population and lower unemployment level but to compare crime rates is difficult because of the above. Sydney would be seen as having a higher level of crime but has 4 times the population. I have worked in every suburb of Sydney as a Security Officer for over 20 years and there is only 2 small areas where I have felt unsafe in all that time, I can walk down any street of Sydney or Canberra at any time of the day and feel 100% safe.
